Benjamin Ree’s portrait of the world champion chess player Magnus Carlsen will be the first Norwegian documentary film to screen as a world premiere at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival (April 13-24).
The film produced by Moskus Film with support among others from Nordisk Film & TV Fond is one of 18 international documentaries unspooling at the festival’s Spotlight section. Frédéric Boyer, Artistic Director said: “Magnus is not only an amazing portrait of a chess prodigy, but is also a unique coming of age story, shot over a decade, about the development of a champion who has dedicated his life to the game. We are thrilled to screen it at the Tribeca Film Festival this year.”
At the last European Film Market in Berlin the film was one of TrustNordisk’s hottest titles and was sold to Germany and Austria (NFP), Hong Kong (EDKO films Ltd.), former Yugoslavia (Discovery Film) and Benelux (September Film Rights), with Yes DBS Satellite Service picking up TV-rights to Israel. The film will open in Norway in the autumn, just before the Chess World Championship in the US.
