Last night the star of Ride Upon the Storm became the first ever actor in a DR series to pick up the coveted statuette in New York.
The 54-year old actor was running for Best Male Performer at the 46th annual International Emmy Awards against Billy Campbell for Cardinal (Canada), Tolga Saritas for Soz (Turkey), and Julio Andrade for One Against All (Brazil).
Commenting on his win, the actor said: "It seems completely surreal here. There were so many strong performances from the other nominees. In Denmark, for many years, we have been the front runners of drama, and this prize underlines that people can still count on us. I'm so happy and honoured.”
DR Drama’s Camilla Hammerich, producer of Ride Upon the Storm added: "It is a great honour and pleasure for DR and Denmark that Lars Mikkelsen has received this year's International Emmy for his role in Ride Upon the Storm. He deserves it completely. For over two years, Lars has lived and breathed with the character of Johannes, and with his brilliant acting talent and his unremitting work, he has created a stunning portrait of a multifaceted and violent human being."
Mikkelsen had already been voted Best Actor for his role in the DR Drama series at the national Robert awards and is well-known internationally for his part in House of Cards. DR Drama has been nominated 22 times at the International Emmys and won five awards for Best Drama series for The Eagle (Ørnen), The Protectors (Livvagterne), Nikolaj and Julie (Nikolaj og Julie), Young Andersen (Unge Andersen) and Unit One (Rejseholdet).
The series Ride Upon the Storm created by Adam Price was produced by DR Drama, in co-production with ARTE and SAM le Français, with support among others from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. The show was sold by Studiocanal to more than 77 territories.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Science in New York had a total of 44 nominees across 11 categories and 20 countries. The award for Best Drama series went to Spain’s Money Heist and Best Movie/Mini- Series to the UK production Man in An Orange Suite.
