The first English-language film by the Golden Globe nominated Finnish director is currently filming in Ireland’s Achill Island.
In the title roles are James Cosmo (Braveheart, The Pyramid Texts, The Name of the Rose), Catherine Walker (Dark Song, The Deceived) and Bríd Brennan (Dancing at Lughnasa, Brooklyn).
Described to us earlier by Härö as his “most emotional film since Mother of Mine", the film reunites the director with the same co-writers Jimmy Karlsson and Kirsi Vikman.
The story centres on Howard, an old sea captain who falls in love with his housekeeper, Annie. Howard’s adult daughter Grace, doesn’t accept the relationship and she wants to get back a father she never really had.
“My Sailor, My Love is a story about the ability to give and receive love. How is it that some of us find it, while others feel the immense pain of longing but never receiving [love], said Härö in a statement.
Top crew members include cinematographer Robert Nordström who worked with Härö on his last feature Life & Death, editor Philippe Ravoet (Aawah, Unit 42) and production designer John Hand (Maudie, Rig 45).
The €3.7 million European co-production is spear-headed by producers Kai Nordberg and Kaarle Aho, co-founders of Finland’s established outfit Making Movies, in co-production with Ireland’s Samson Film and Belgium’s U-Media.
“We have worked with U-Media before on Heavy Trip, but never before with Samson Films,” said Nordberg who is thrilled with their collaboration. The film received support from Screen Ireland, Irish section 481 cash rebate, Ireland’s Wrap Fund, support from the Finnish Film Foundation, Yle, Nordisk Film & TV Fond and Finland’s Konstsamfundet.
Nordisk Film will handle the Finnish release in 2022.
