Fans of the Finnish sci-fi spoof movie Iron Sky can look forward to watching the sequel, to be launched with a Scandi-wide red carpet event at Helsinki’s multiplex Tennispalatsi. 

The theatrical launch of Iron Sky-The Coming Race at Finnkino’s cinema complex will be live-streamed around Scandinavia, where closed events will be put together by co-organisers Iron Sky Universe and SF Studios. Ticket sales opened on November 1st, and over 1,000 tickets have already been pre-sold, according to producer Tero Kaukomaa. 

The $20m Finnish/German/Belgian co-production has gone through a bumpy ride over the last 3-4 years. “Shot in Belgium in the fall of 2015, the challenges began when the extensive visual effect work started,” say the producers. “The demanding visual world of this film and the high quality requirements of the filmmaking team led to delays in the schedule which eventually led to the financial challenges. The first attempt at a new financing solution was thwarted due to a frivolous lawsuit regarding the first film, which was resolved in Iron Sky Universe's favour by the Market Court in Helsinki in May 2018.  

Director Timo Vuorensola says: “We didn't sit on our hands while waiting for the next round of financing to come into place. We showed the incomplete edits of the film to our fans and key partners and were able to collect invaluable feedback. We realised an additional scene was needed which we were able to go and shoot. While it's been a bummer that the release plans had been delayed, it’s allowed us to come out with a better film."

The new round of financial partners include 120db Films and a group of Finnish investors. The film is produced by Iron Sky Universe's Kaukomaa, with Belgium’s Potemkino, and Germany’s 27 Films Production.

Sales agent Myriad Pictures has pre-sold several territories including France, the UK, China, India and Japan. The 2012 original film Iron Sky told the story of Moon Nazis returning to Earth with a fleet of spaceships. The sequel continues the story 20 years later, and takes the heroes into the Centre of the Earth where they encounter an army of reptilians and their dinosaur army.
