The Icelandic born filmmaker Sólveig Anspach is touring Europe with her new off-beat comedy Back Soon, produced by Zik Zak Filmworks. On Icelandic screens since August 8, the film will be closing the Locarno Film Festival this Saturday August 16 before opening in France on August 20.

Anspach's third feature film following Haut les coeurs (1999) and Stormy Weather (2003) is described by the Locarno Film Festival as a "hilarious Scandinavian comedy, full of poetic touches...and marijuana!" Mirroring the director's French/Icelandic cultural mix, the film's cast and credit includes professionals from both nations such as top Icelandic cinematographer Bergsteinn Björgúljsson (Jar City), talents Ingvar E. Sigurðsson and Didda Jónsdóttir, as well as French actor Julien Cottereau, and co-writer Jean-Luc Gaget.

Zik Zak producer Skúli Malmquist said he was approached by Paris-based Anspach and was immediately drawn to her personality and ideas about film. The €1.5m Back Soon was produced by Zik Zak with the director's usual French production partner Patrick Sobelman (Ex-Nihilo), in co-production with Bac Films who handles French and international distribution. Back Soon was also backed by the Icelandic Film Centre, the Centre National de la Cinématographie, and Eurimages.

For Malmquist, the selection as closing film of the 61st Locarno International Film Festival is "fabulous". "The fact that the festival decided to show the film in the Piazza Grande means that they believe it is a crowd pleaser," he stressed.

"This is a very good Norwegian year for our Festival"
