Iceland picks Agnes Joy for Oscars race

Silja Hauksdóttir’s drama is the fourth Nordic film directed by a woman, running for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Hauksdóttir grabbed six Icelandic Edda awards this year for her sophomore film, including Best Film, Script, Actress and Supporting Actor. The film produced by Birgitta Björnsdóttir and Rannveig Jónsdóttir for Vintage Pictures was the top selling Icelandic film in 2019. Media Move handles world sales.

Katla M. Þorgeirsdóttir stars as Rannveig who is experiencing a burnout in all aspects of her suburban life. She's stuck with a job she hates and a marriage that is slowly dying. On top of that, she's constantly fighting with her rebellious daughter, Agnes (Donna Cruz).

The arrival of a new neighbour, the handsome actor Hreinn (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson) further disrupts the household as he seduces both the mother and daughter.

Other Nordic films by female directors in the 2021 Oscars’ race include Zaida Bergroth’s Tove (Finland), Amanda Kernell’s Charter (Sweden) and Maria Sødahl’s Hope (Norway). Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round is representing Denmark. The shortlist for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced February 9, 2021 and the final nominations March 15, 2021.
