The mini-series just started filming around Helsinki and is set to premiere in 2022. It's directed by Bordertown’s Jyri Kähönen is based on the titular 2017 UK show originally produced by The Crown’s Left Bank Pictures. Sony Pictures Television handles global sales.
The Finnish version is penned by Helsinki filmi writer/producer Mia Ylönen (Bad Apples, Moscow Noir) and Tuuli Hostikka. In the title roles are Maria Ylipää (Arctic Circle), Pamela Tola (Ladies of Steel), Olavi Uusivirta (Deadwind), Sara Paavolainen (Peacemaker) and Eero Saarinen.
The three-part series is an intense psychological thriller about the fear of losing one’s professional and personal life. When successful architect Ella (Maria Ylipää) gets pregnant, she finds maternity cover in Paula (Pamela Tola). The replacement seems perfect, but her enthusiasm slowly turns into an obsession.
“The Replacement elegantly enters the inner layers of the human psyche like Hitchcock’s movies and undermines the setting of family life,” said Ylönen. “The series slowly ties a rope around the main character and keeps the spectator uncertain about who is right and who will survive.”
Ani Korpela, Head of Content Business at Elisa Viihde said the Finnish version of the BBC hit is a new way for the leading Finnish streamer to “look for new ways to produce” quality shows during the pandemic.
This year Elisa Viihde Viaplay will premiere around 50 original series or films. Recent successes include Man in Room 301 and Partisan. The next anticipated psycho thriller set to premiere May 8 is Bad Apples.
