He will say farewell after 10 years at the helm of programming Scandinavia’s largest film festival.

Holmberg took over as artistic director from Marit Kapla in 2014 and has since transformed the festival into a hybrid event with a digital platform and a dedicated arthouse streaming service - Draken Films, consolidating the festival’s position both in the Nordics and internationally.

”My experience as the artistic director of Göteborg Film Festival has been an incredibly fulfilling journey, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of an organisation that serves the art of cinema and its audience,” he said.

“When I took on the role, my ambition was to develop the festival with blending its traditions with innovative approaches, and I am filled with pride for the progress we've accomplished. I am particularly happy about the growth and increased diversity of our audience. I am also proud of our exploration of the artistic and audience related possibilities at the intersection of physical and digital cinema culture”, he observed.

While underscoring that the festival and its industry platforms Nordic Film Market and TV Drama Vision successfully navigated through the pandemic, Holmgren promises to shape the festival’s 47th edition “into something amazing!”

The board of the Göteborg Film Festival has now started the process of recruiting a new artistic director.

The next edition will unspool January 26-February 4, 2024.
