Four features, four TV series, one doc receive funding

In its May round of support, Nordisk Film & TV Fond has allocated NOK 15,850,000 to nine projects, including the NRK political series Power Play which received the largest grant.

    Story: The film is a warm-hearted story of survival and friendship. Amal (12) is on the run from Syria. She wants to travel to Greece where her sisters are in a refugee camp, to then join her parents with them in Sweden. In a Turkish harbour, she meets refugee smuggler Sam. The imaginative, humorous but traumatised young girl and the older and refined Sam, travel together through Europe to try to find freedom and on their epic journey, they develop a father-daughter relationship, which is both their survival and awakening.

    The debut feature by the producer of A Hustle’s Diary (Måste Gitt) Hassan is currently filming in Greece. The B-Reel Film production is co-produced by Film i Väst and SVT, with co-financing from NRK, Yle, DR among others, support from the Swedish Film Institute. The domestic release is pencilled for March 2022.

    Story: The latest film by Norwegian director Christian Lo (Los Bando) is based on the eponymous children’s book by Pija Lindenbaum. The main character Ella (8) is looking forward to spending a week with her favourite uncle. The fabulous stay she has envisioned soon turns into a mess, where all becomes about getting rid of Steve, Uncle Tommy's new boyfriend!

    The comedy is co-produced by Sweden’s Saperi Film, Norway’s Filmbin, the Netherlands’ Viking Film, SVT, Filmpool Nord, Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, the Norwegian Film Institute, and Creative Europe. Filming is due to start July 20 in Stockholm. The premiere is set for the fall 2022.

    Story: The latest film by Öhman (Simple Simon, 100 Code) deals with family, legacy, rural life and coming to term with your past. 30-something illustrator Lisa and her siblings meet at their parents’ farm for the first time in a decade, to find out that their father wants only one to inherit the forest that’s been in the family for generations. Is anyone willing to move back home? The film co-produced by Sweden’s Breidablick Film is due to start filming in August.

    Story: Following the aftermath of a tragic accident that claimed the life of one of their twins, Rachel and husband Anthony relocate to the other side of the world with their surviving son in the hopes of building a new life. What begins as a time of healing in the quiet Finnish countryside soon takes an ominous turn when Rachel begins to unravel the torturous truth about her son and confronts the malicious forces attempting to take a hold of him.

    The English-language film produced by Don Films was executive produced by Joris van Wijk, Shudder’s Emily Gotto, Film Constellation’s Fabien Westerhoff, and Post Control Helsinki’s Toni Valla. It received backing from Shudder, Playtime, Nordisk Film, C More/MTV3, The Finnish Film Foundation and the Estonian Film Institute. Filming in Estonia and Finland wrapped recently.

    Story: the supernatural thriller series is adapted by Queen of Hearts’ writer Maren Louise Käehne from Kerstin Ekman’s eponymous best-selling novel.

    The story begins on a Midsummer night in 1970, when two tourists are found murdered in a tent, far up in the mountains of North Sweden, near the small town of Blackwater. The incident intersects four random people’s lives, intertwining their destinies for better and for worse.

    The series commissioned by SVT is co-produced by Germany’s ARD Degeto, Filmpool Nord, co-financing from DR, Yle, NRK and RÚV. Piv Bernth said principal photography which started June 7, has been “very busy and very successful”. “Mikael Marcimain and his team are excited about working with this amazing story and it’s an honour to make it come to life.” The premiere on SVT is scheduled for 2022.

    Story: The first season Mobile 1.0 stages the pioneering years of Nokia mobile’s uncertain first steps into the global arena in the 1980s-90s, as dedicated engineers, lawyers and employees fight for the destiny of their company.

    The series was co-produced by Aurora Studios’ Ari Tolppanen, Petri Kemppinen, with backing from Aurora Studios’ Finnish Impact Film Fund, Business Finland and the West Finland Film Commission. The series will premiere on C More in 2022.

    Story: Power Play is a ground-breaking drama about a crucial turning point in Norwegian political history, told as if taking place in the modern world. The year is 1974. The setting is 2021. When the Labour Party is torn apart by a disastrous feud between the Chairman and the Prime Minister, the young idealist Gro Harlem Brundtland is unwillingly pulled into the tactics and scheming of modern politics. As the government implodes around her, Gro learns to play her own games of power, climbing the ranks until she is left the last woman standing in the ruins of Labour’s celebrated social democracy.
