Pitched at the 2019 Berlinale Co-Pro Series, the eight-part series The Reindeer Mafia is written/directed by Mika Kurvinen (Invisible Heroes).
The Cosa Nostra story set in Lapland features a power struggle within a family which controls the local businesses and large plots of land. Brita Nelihanka, the great arctic matriarch, is about to lose her fight against cancer. Her wealth is to be divided evenly between the members of her family, and the ill-gotten lands are to be returned to their original owners. The family is torn apart when her will is revealed at the funeral, and many past secrets are finally revealed.
“The Reindeer Mafia is an incredibly intriguing and unique story that brings audiences into a corner of the world they’ve never seen,” said Klaus Zimmermann, managing partner at Dynamic Television.“
The series is produced by Pete Eklund and Liisa Penttilä-Asikainen, partners in Helsinki-based Kaiho Republic, together with Samuli Edelmann and Mika Kurvinen. Norway’s Mathis Ståle Mathisen is co-producing for Rein Film.
Filming is due to start in January, with a premiere on Telia-owned C More, set for early 2023.
L.A.-based Dynamic Television’s recent Nordic pick-ups for world distribution include the upcoming Swedish thriller series The Fighter, set to premiere on SVT in 2022, and the Icelandic dramedy My Funeral, launched last spring on the local streamer Síminn.
