discovery+ launched in the Nordics

On Tuesday customers of Discovery’s streaming service Dplay in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have been invited to its new name, logo and look-with the launch of discovery+.

The Nordic premiere of discovery+ is part of a global rollout of the US media group Discovery Inc,’s streaming service in 25 territories unveiled in December and its plan to strengthen its brand in an increasingly crowded streaming market.

“I am proud that we are able to provide our users with a brand new and fresh look to our streaming service and on top of that, we’re constantly adding more entertainment,” said Nicklas Norrby, Discovery's Director of Nordic Operations.” All users of our service have access to the same great series, documentaries, sports and channels as before, and over the coming year, we will be able to offer even more unique content. We will also shift more of our sports programmes on Discovery+.”

In 2021, content on discovery+ Denmark will include reality formats such Ex on the Beach, the entertaining programme Over Atlanten (Across the Atlantic) featuring the former prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, an upcoming new Danish true-crime series to be unveiled early February and several Danish fiction series set to premiere in the fall.

In Sweden, discovery+ viewers will discover among others the local comedy series Pappa’s pojkar, about four adult best friends still living as carefree teenagers. In the main roles are Christoffer Nordenrot and Sweden’s top humour trio JLC (Jonas Fagerström, Lucas Simonsson and Carl Déman).

In Norway, the popular long-running local series Neste Sommer (Next Summer), Hvite Gutter (White Guys), Brille will make their comeback, as well as Aldri voksen season 2 starring Atle Antonsen, Laila Goody and Andrea Bræn Hovid among others. Also slated for 2021 is the new comedy show Fjols til Fjells (Fools in the Mountain)-loose spin off of the popular feature film.

Next to comedy series and reality shows, several documentaries will premiere on discovery+ Norway such as the high-profile Norwegian true crime show Baneheia-kampen om sanneheten (lit’ ‘Baneheia the fight for the truth’) about the notorious case of a double rape and murder of two young girls that occurred in 2000 in Baneheia, Kristiansand. The six-part series produced by Monster will premiere January 12 on discovery+ and later on TVNorge.

Meanwhile, in a separate deal to widen discovery+’s customer base around the world, the US media group Discover Inc. has signed several distribution and platform agreements including a multi-year deal with Vodafone covering 100+ million homes in 12 European markets, including Iceland.
