Six-part series will shed light on the 1990 ferry disaster that cost over 250 lives.

Director Mikala Krogh (The Newsroom-Off the Record), screenwriter Nikolaj Scherfig (The Bridge) and cinematographer Manuel Claro (Melancholia) are on board the docu series about the 1990 ferry disaster.

The 6-part series will shed light on the tragedy that cost the lives of 159 passengers and 99 crew members on the night of April 9, 1990, after a fire broke out. Aboard the ferry were 383 passengers who left Oslo to Frederikshavn during Easter holidays.

Later reports revealed that the fire was started by criminal hands, but to this day, the case remains unsolved.  Politiken journalist Lars Jalskov who has investigated the case for eight years and wrote the book ‘Branden-Gåden om Scandinavian Star (‘Fire: the Scandinavian Star Mystery’), will collaborate with Scherfig on the screenplay.

The series is produced by Sigrid Dyekjær of Danish Documentary and Thomas Heinesen of Nordisk Film Production Denmark, in co-production with Nordisk Film Norway.

DR, NRK and SVT are expected to broadcast Scandinavian Star in 2020, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.
