Thomas Vinterberg’s festival hit had the best opening weekend for a local film in the drama genre in seven years, with 102,366 tickets sold.
The highly-anticipated drama launched on Thursday by Nordisk Film across 170 screens in 135 cinemas. It benefitted from the influential audience-boosting Biografklub Danmark, rave reviews in the local media and a star-studded cast led by Mads Mikkelsen.
With 102,366 admissions after four days (including sneak previews), Another Round enjoyed the best premiere for a drama film since Vinterberg’s The Hunt, which opened in 2013 with 118,913 admissions. The results are all the more impressive considering the current covid-19 restrictions, including 500 maximum capacity per screen, 2 square meter per cinema-goer in the auditorium and 4 square meter per cinema-goer in each theatre lobby.
“I am overwhelmed by the response from Danish people. It is a crucial film for my family and I, and we are therefore both relieved and grateful," said the director.
“It’s great to see the success of Another Round; audiences have really embraced the film and returned to the cinemas in large scale,” said Nordisk Film’s director of local acquisitions Rasmus Krogh to nordicfilmandtvnews.com.
Another Round’s smash opening follows the Zentropa film’s excellent international festival run. After picking up the Cannes label as official Cannes entry, the film had its international premiere in Toronto, followed by a strong showing at San Sebastian where its main actors Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe shared the Silver Shell-Best Actor Award on Saturday.
The film also picked up the Zinemaldia Feroz Award from the Spanish press, and the Signis Award from the World Catholic Association for Communication.
More than 30 global distributors have acquired the film from TrustNordisk, including Samuel Goldwyn in the US.
Another Round is already the fifth most successful Danish film of 2020. The biggest local hits so far are the comedy Klown-the Final (437,381 admissions), the WW2 drama Into the Darkness (369, 821), period drama The Good Traitor (176,874) and thriller The Exception (152,007).
Meanwhile Christopher Nolan’s Tenet released by SF Studios/Warner Bros has attracted 182,099 Danes after five weeks on screens, according to figures from FAFID.
