After the crime thriller feature The Purity of Vengeance that took the top of the 2018 Danish charts and his convincing TV drama debut Warrior (TV2/Miso Film) that received critical praise, the director will bring a new twist to Nordic noir with the series Face to Face (Førhøret), co-written by Jakob Weiss (That Time of Year).

“The genre convention gives space to drama and character conflict”, said the director of Reconstruction to www.nordicfilmandtvnews.com. “It’s a wonderful engine that pushes the story forward. It was new for me only a couple of years ago and now I’m swimming in crime!”

The 8x30’ series will innovate both in format and structure. “Face to face is an old dream of mine to create a tight concept, cut to the bone, stripped of all superfluous, leaving only the essence” says Boe.

The storyline centres on police officer Bjørn [Ulrich Thomsen] who investigates the killing of his daughter. People around him believe she might have committed suicide, but he doesn’t. Both the stakes and the suspense rise relentlessly as Bjørn inches closer to the truth. Boe says that “beyond the crime investigation, the series deals with family, loss and redemption”.

Each episode shot over one week, is one long scene, in which Bjørn confronts a new suspect in a new location around Copenhagen. “The engine is the crime, but the underlying story is one of a father and daughter’s turbulent relationship,” explains Boe.

Besides Ulrich Thomsen who plays the main role, an exceptional all star Danish cast has joined Face to Face: Lars Mikkelsen (Ride Upon the Storm), Nikolaj Lie Kaas (The Purity of Vengeance), Trine Dyrholm (Queen of Hearts), David Dencik (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Lars Ranthe (Pros and Cons), Søren Malling (Borgen), Katrine Greis-Rosenthal (A Fortunate Man) and Clara Rosager (The Purity of Vengeance).

Boe is in the middle of filming week 1 of eight.

The series is Boe’s second collaboration with producers and co-managing directors of Miso Film, Jonas Allen and Peter Bose. It’s also his first commissioning from NENT Group’s steaming service Viaplay. “They have been supportive from day one,” comments Boe. “Of course, we have a stellar cast, but we bring in lots of new stuff as well. They’ve been willing to take risks.”

Jakob Mejlhede Andersen, NENT Group EVP and Head of Content said: “Our originals have been hugely successful in Denmark and across the Nordic region, and now we’re assembling a Danish dream team to create Face to Face and ask just how intense a crime series can be.” He continues: “This is a minimalist drama of maximum suspense, where every glance and every word are full of meaning, and it shows our commitment to establishing Viaplay as the home of truly unique viewer experiences."

Face to Face will premiere exclusively on Viaplay late 2019.
