The film directed by Janus Metz nabs 10 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director.
Sverrir Gudnason who plays Björn Borg in the SF Studios biopic, is also running for Best Actor in a Leading Role, while John McEnroe’s screen alter ego Shia LaBeouf is vying for Best Supporting Actor, alongside Stellan Skarsgård, cast as Borg’s coach.
Tarik Saleh’s The Nile Hilton Incident is the second most nominated Swedish film of the year with eight accolades, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor (Fares Fares). The Atmo production which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance’s world cinema section last year, has been particularly successful in France where it sold more than 381,000 tickets.
Two striking feature debuts come third with seven nominations each, including Best Film: the San Sebastian Film Festival entry Ravens by Jens Assur and Nordic Council Film Prize nominated Sámi Blood by Amanda Kernell.
Despite its Palme d’or award and record six European Film Awards, Ruben Östlund’s satire The Square has only six Guldbagge nominations but in top categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Claes Bang) and Best Script (Östlund). The Plattform production is also selected for the new Guldbagge Audience Award, with seven other contenders, such as Sweden’s top selling film of 2017: Solsidan-The Movie (also known as Sunny Side). The comedy by Felix Herngren and his brother Måns Herngren has also earned two nominations for Best Actress (Mia Skäringer) and Best Make Up (Petra Cabbe).
Nordisk Film & TV Fond is associated to 19 Guldbagge nominations for Borg/McEnroe, The Square, Solsidan and the family film Monky, running for Best Special Effects (Alex Hansson, Chris Stenner).
The Guldbagge awards ceremony will be held on January 22 in Stockholm.
