Following up on its critically acclaimed The King of Ping Pong, Sweden's Bob Film is supervising the directorial debut of another up and coming Swedish filmmaker Beata Gårdeler, currently finalising the shooting of Fem i Tolv.
Fem i tolv (no English title yet) is loosely based on the best-selling autobiography by Lotta Thell, ‘I skuggan av värmen', the gripping story of a police offer who falls in love with a 25 year-old heroin addict. Bob Films' co-managing director Anna Croneman read the novel in 2004 immediately thought it was great material for a feature film. "It's a very touching and strong love story, aimed at women of 25 +" said Croneman.
The producer had previously collaborated on Gårdeler's 2006 short film 2010 which dealt with a woman's problems with alcohol. She saw similarities in the two stories and offered the feature project to Gårdeler. Then scriptwriter Karin Arrhenius (Ett öga rött) came on board. The two lead roles of Sara and Erik were given to theatre actors Malin Crépin (photo) and Joel Kinnaman. "Malin hasn't done anything before in film, but she will undoubtedly become a star," asserted Croneman. It was important for the role of Sara to get a fresh face. It's a very tough part, and you have to believe in her."
Svensk Filmindustri (for whom Croneman worked as an in-house producer before joining Jan Blomgren at Bob Film in 2004) has Scandinavian and international distribution rights. Other co-financiers who contributed to the SEK16.8m budget include Filmpool Nord, Film I Väst, SVT, the Swedish Film Institute, the Norwegian Film Fund and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Final editing will take place during the summer and delivery date is set for March 2009.
Bob Film's next feature film to go into production in May is Ulf Malmros' Bröllops fotograf (‘The Wedding Photographer'). On the TV series front, the company is in production with 12 new episodes of Höök for SVT, while its successful series The Regicide by Kathrine Windfeld, also produced for SVT, will be aired this Friday April 14 on Danish broadcaster DR1 at 20h00.
