Number 1 in 48 markets including Finland and Norway

Last weekend Rovio Animated film Angry Birds flew to the top of the BO in the US and China in its first weekend and chartered number 1 in 48 markets including Finland and Norway.

After two weekends, more than 380,000 people in the Nordic region have flocked to watch the animated film based on the app-game franchise created in 2009. Worldwide, the film has earned an estimated $150 million from 83 territories according to Sony Releasing and with summer holidays approaching, earnings should continue to soar.

The financial risks for the film was carried almost entirely by Espoo-based Rovio that invested $73M for the making of the film and another $100M in marketing costs, while Sony took charge of worldwide distribution against an 8% share in ticket sales according to the New York Times.

The strong performance of the film worldwide will no doubt bring much comfort to Rovio’s management and personal as the group’s huge bet on Angry Birds the Movie led to a loss of 13 million in 2015 for the group compared to a 10.3 million operating profit in 2014.
