The Swedish custody drama directed by Sami Blood’s Amanda Kernell is currently filming in Northern Sweden for Nordisk Film.
In the drama thriller written by Kernell, Norwegian actress Ane Dahl Torp (Home Ground) plays 40-year old Alice who realises she is about to lose custody of her two children, played by Tintin Poggats Sarri (17) and Troy Lundkvist (9). In a last attempt to win them back, she abducts them, taking them on an illicit charter trip to the Canary Islands.
Borg vs McEnroe’s Sverrir Gudnason plays the father. "I myself grew up with divorced parents and I see Charter as a declaration of love to all divorced parents and their children,” said Kernell. “For me Charter examines every parents’ greatest fear – the loss of their children. I want to explore how far one could and should go for the sake of your children.”
Producer Lars Lindström who worked with Kernell on Sami Blood said she took her time to develop the script and together, they looked for exceptional locations “We wanted to create a drama that would have a broad appeal. We therefore chose the settings very carefully, from the Swedish deep winter above the polar circle to the lava beaches and deserts of the Canary Islands." He continues: “Our production designer Sabine Hviid [Darkland, The Charmer] DoP Sophia Olsson [Sami Blood, Sparrows], costume designer Sandra Woltersdorf [The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo] did an amazing job, and our casting director Jeanette Klintberg [Sami Blood, Midnight Sun] backed by second casting director Anette Winblad helped us find the right actors who could speak the northern dialect, as well as the children."
After the challenging shoot in Northern Sweden since January 21 under icy temperatures, the crew was looking forward to the smoother climate of Tenerife where filming starts February 14 until March 21.
The SEK 37.5m (€3.6m) film is produced by Nordisk Film Production Sweden, in co-production with Nordisk Film Production Denmark, Nordisk Film Production Norway, SVT, TV2 Norge, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, Danish Film Institute, Norwegian Film Institute, Filmpool Nord, Film i Västerbotten, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, Eurimages, the MEDIA Programme and the Canary Island Tax Rebate.
