The new Star Wars trilogy produced by Lucas Film for Disney is to be partly filmed in Iceland according to Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið. The crew is expected to arrive in the country at the end of April and the local production service company True North is rumoured to be attached to the project.
The first film in the new Stars Wars triptych series will be directed by JJ Abrams from a script by the Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine). It will be set 30 years after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and delivery date is scheduled for December 2015.
Hollywood companies lured to the Icelandic shores by the attractive 20% reimbursement of production costs and dramatic landscape have brought much needed cash to the local production sector in recent years. Among the latest US blockbuster films shot in Iceland include Oblivion, Prometheus, Thor, the Dark World, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the upcoming biblical epic Noah by Darren Aronofsky and sci-fi movie Interstellar by Christopher Nolan.
