The comedy drama is based on an idea by co-stars Alex Høgh Andersen (Vikings) and Magnus Haugaard (Guilt), developed and written by Søren Felbo (The Orchestra, Pros and Cons).

The 6x25’ series which is currently filming, is directed by Christian Dyekjær (Guru, All I Want For Christmas). Trin Hjortkjær Thomsen and Laura Frederikke Kragholm are producing for Nordisk Film Series, with Viaplay’s Dorte Fuglsang serving as executive producer. Viaplay Content Distribution handles sales.

Call Me Dad (Kalrd mig far) is the story of two long-time friends, the tormented Emil (Alex Høgh Andersen) and the outgoing Viktor (Magnus Haugaard), now partners in a sustainable catering company. But when Emil finds out that Viktor is dating his mother Helle, everything is turned upside down and their friendship is seriously put to the test.

Besides Ellen Hillingsø (The Bridge, Rita) who plays the mother, the stellar ensemble Danish cast includes Roberta Reichhardt (Baby Fever, Sjit Happens), Johanne Milland (The Venus Effect), Søren Sætter-Lassen (Seaside Hotel, The Killing), Peter Gantzler (The Legacy), Lone Rødbro (The Shift, Borgen), Bjarne Henriksen (Cry Wolf), Lila Nobel (The Rain), and Oscar Dyekjær Giese (Chernobyl).

“My vision is to create a contemporary comedy that exudes visual and narrative richness,” said director Christian Dyekjær. “The show will entertain while exploring topics such as how we treat each other and our world today. It’s a pleasure to work with two of the best acting talents of their generation, and Viaplay viewers can look forward to a very modern show with a remarkably strong supporting cast.”

Filippa Wallestam, Viaplay Group Chief Content Officer takes the opportunity of this new announcement to reiterate Viaplay’s commitment to Danish scripted drama, despite the current dispute with Danish creatives over payments of rights from content on VOD, (see our story CLICK HERE) and Denmark’s recent introduction of a 6% streaming tax, vehemently criticised by Viaplay. (see our story CLICK HERE).

“This sharp and warm series sums up what Viaplay wants to create in Denmark - high-quality storytelling, told by both established and upcoming talents, with huge potential to reach local and international audiences,” said Wallestam. “In recent years, we’ve premiered or announced more than 30 Danish Viaplay Originals, and our ambition is to deliver many more in the future, provided we have regulatory certainty and a fair playing field,” she insisted.

Among recent Viaplay Danish series is Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom Exodus (co-produced with DR), set to world premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival, before heading off to Toronto.

Call Me Dad is expected to premiere in 2023.
