The French mini-major is both co-producer and global distributor of Vinterberg’s first TV drama, set to start filming in September 2022.
The six-part series is produced by Zentropa Entertainment in Denmark, in co-production with Studiocanal, TV2 Denmark, Zentropa Sweden, Film i Väst, with co-financing from NRK, TV4/C More, support from the Danish Film Institute’s Public Service Fund, and Creative Europe. The French subscription-based Canal+ will platform the series as a Canal+ Création Originale.
Co-written by Vinterberg and Bo Hr Hansen (Department Q-Journal 64, The Art of Crying), the storyline echoes the current Ukrainian drama, with its focus on displacement and families forced to leave everything behind them and to separate.
In Families like Ours, a natural disaster - flooding - is the cause of the human tragedy and refugee crisis out of Denmark. Laura is a high school student in love for the first time, on the brink of graduation, when the news of the evacuation breaks. The new reality will forever change her life and make her choose between her divorced parents.
Studiocanal’s EVP Global Production Ron Halpern and Executive Managing Director TV Francoise Guyonnet said: “We are thrilled to partner with Thomas Vinterberg on his first series. Families Like Ours deals with some incredibly important themes in contemporary life and - as always with his work - this will be executed with such empathy for each and every character.“
The series is produced by Vinterberg’s long-time partner Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing at Zentropa. Speaking earlier to nordicfilmandtvnews.com, Jørgensen said Vinterberg had the idea for the series, even before she started working with him on the Oscar-winning film Another Round. “It’s like a saga therefore the TV format is ideal,” she said. “It’s about saying goodbye to the country you live in, your family, everything you know because of climate change.”
Filming is due to start in September on location in Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
Studiocanal will handle global sales, outside France, Benelux and Scandinavia, handled by TrustNordisk.
