Stray Dogs’ managing director Nathan Fischer says the two films fit perfectly into his company’s slate, consisting of ‘rare films’ and debut features. He said he picked up Laurits Flensted-Jensen's Neon Heart because he was interested in working with up-and-coming producer Julie Friis Walenciak (The Return) and had been looking for a while for a new Danish director able to deliver a gritty, character-driven drama like Nicolas Winding Refn.
Neon Heart tells the story of three people who love each other but have forgotten how to say it. Laura (played by Victoria Carmen Sonne of Winter Brothers) is on her way to a porn film casting, Niklas (Niklas Herskind of Darkland) is trying to take care of two men with Down’s Syndrome, and Frederik (Noah Skovgaard Skands) has plans for an assault. We meet them over the course of one day, in glimpses and moments, chasing life and each other.
The film is produced by Walenciak Film with support from the Danish Film Institute’s New Danish Screen. Delivery is set for the fall 2018.
Stray Dogs’ other Scandinavian title also in post-production is Nyholm’s follow up to his critically-acclaimed The Giant. Koko-di Koko-da is described as a ‘nightmarish Groundhog Day, a dreamy tale of dark woods, and a universal narrative about a relationship that is falling apart.
In the film, a couple traumatised by the loss of their daughter, goes on a trip to the woods, to try to save their relationship. Instead they get trapped in a surreal nightmare with a bloody-minded variety artist and his shady entourage. The film is produced by Johannes Nyholm Production and Beofilm.
Stray Dogs is screening in Cannes the Colombian animation film Virus Tropical, Filipino hip hop adventure Respeto, French children’s film Cléo & Paul and UK fantasy drama Pin Cushion.
