Tuva Novotny, Peter Franzén, Felicia Truedsson headline the epic film, directed by Richard Holm.

After Norway which has delivered a string of successful disaster movies, such as Fantefilm’s The Wave and The Quake, SF Studios hopes to lure Swedish crowds into local cinemas with its first homemade disaster film epic, written by director Richard Holm, Robin Sherlock and Nicola Sinclair.

"A truly action-packed disaster film has been at the top of my wish list for almost four years, so it is with great pride to now see The Abyss come to life. A thrilling plot with the heart in the right place, modern cast and a highly possible and terrifying scenario creates great anticipation and potential,” said Yaba Holst, Executive Producer, Head of Nordic Acquisition SF Studios. “We want to offer the Swedish audience films that they want to see, and local action films are extremely neglected despite of strong demand,’ she noted.

The A-list cast of The Abyss (Avgrunden) takes in Tuva Novotny (The Kingdom Exodus, Annihilation), Kardo Razazzi (Alex, Honour), Peter Franzén (Vikings, Meander), Felicia Truedsson (Young Royals), Edvin Ryding (Young Royals) and the young Tintin Poggats Sarri (Charter).

Set in the mining town of Kiruna, northern Sweden, the film follows a family faced with the unthinkable when the disaster everyone feared suddenly becomes a reality. Frigga tries to balance her risky job as a security manager in the Kiirunavaara mine, with her family life, her new love Dabir and her ex, who doesn't want to let go. But when the ground suddenly starts to shake under their feet, survival not to be pulled into the abyss is the only thing that matters.

The setting will play a major part in the action-packed movie, and filming on location in Kiruna, partly in Tampere, Finland for the mine scenes, have been crucial, as explained by producer Joakim Hansson: "Kiruna is the most important place for the story we want to tell. Therefore, it has also been important for us to be able to shoot on location. But to complete the film and maximise both the storytelling and the quality, we are filming in three more European countries. It is also fantastic that SF Studios and all other financiers dare to bet on a genre film, which historically we see very little of in Sweden.”

The film is being produced in collaboration with Finland’s Mjölk Movies, Spain’s Seven Islands Production, Belgium’s Umedia, with co-financing from Film Tampere, Business Finland, the Gran Canaria Film Commission, Spanish tax incentives and the Belgian Tax Shelter.

The Scandinavian major SF Studios plans to release the film in Sweden on September 15, 2023 and is handling rights across the Nordics and internationally.
