The Danish suspense feature which started filming on Monday, is based on the first of three youth novels by Birgitte Lorentzen in her ‘Cykose’ series.
Lorentzen whose YA trilogy books was nominated for the French ‘Le Prix des incorruptibles’ youth literary award, has written the script, together with Henrik Kristensen. Kari Vidø is directing for SF Studios’ producers Julie Rix Bomholt and Mia Elvstrøm Myrälf.
Cychosis (Cykose in Danish) is an intense drama about teenagers Lulu and Mads, who have both had supernatural experiences. The meeting between them leads to a wild and risky search for answers with consequences for both of them.
After a party with a little too many drinks, Lulu ends up in the hospital, where in a near-death experience she sees a girl with a shaved head crying for help. When Lulu awakes, the girl is gone. But from here on, nothing is the same for Lulu, who feels like someone or something is stalking her. At the same time, she meets the infamous, but fascinating Mads, who turns out to be able to see things that no one else can. But hanging out with him might not be such a good idea for Lulu.
Rising acting talent Zoe Bryan Hertz, seen earlier in Viaplay’s YA series Boys, is making her screen debut, next to August Issac Carter (Equinox, Hooligan).
Producer Julie Rix Bomholt said: It’s incredibly exciting and unique to have the opportunity to work with a purely genre film, which at the same time touches on an important and current theme. Zoe and August ARE Lulu and Mads, and we are thrilled to have found two such talented young actors. They have a very special presence and a mutual intensity that almost sparks.”
Filming has just started this week in Copenhagen and will continue in Frederiksberg. The theatrical release via SF Studios is set for March 2024.
The film is co-produced by Finnish genre specialist Aleksi Hyvärinen of Don Films (The Twin) with support from TV2 Denmark, the Danish Film Institute, the Finnish Film Foundation, and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
