Several legendary filmmakers are expected between June 13-17 at the 33rd film festival in Sodankylä, Lapland, founded by the Kaurismäki brothers.

French director Olivier Assayas will host an Ingmar Bergman Masterclass and introduce his own breakthrough film Cold Water. His French/Swiss counterpart Barbet Schroeder is expected with his wife, top actress Bulle Ogier and both film legends will be honoured with films including The Salamander, Single White Female and Barfly.

Other top directors include Chad’s Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (to whom Aki Kaurismäki paid tribute in his film Le Havre), Germany’s Dominik Graf and Thomas Stuber, Spain’s José Louis Guérin, Switzerland’s Katharina Wyss and Anja Kofmel.

The Festival’s popular silent film concerts will be accompanied by award winning foley artists/sound designers Nicolas Becker (Golden Reel winner for Gravity and Mic-Mac à Tire-Larigot), Heikki Kossi and Peter Albrechtsen, both Golden Reel nominated for their work on The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki. The three sound specialists will create new soundscape for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 film The Ring and will discuss their work.

The festival will also give a carte blanche to award-winning Finnish novelist Kjell Westö and 21 Finnish films will screen in Sodankylä including Mikko Mäkelä’s LGBTQ-themed A Moment in the Reeds, the Jussi-award winning The Eternal Road, the comedy Heavy Trip and documentary Ryhmäteatteri by Mika Kaurismäki about the independent theatre group of several prominent Finnish screen talents.
