As much as 80% of the Norwegian population was connected each day to one of the various media platforms of Norwegian public broadcaster NRK in 2008. NRK1 continued to be Norway's largest TV channel, and Himmelblå (Blue Sky Blue) was the all time record Norwegian TV Drama according to the broadcaster's annual report 2008.
2008 was a historical year for NRK with the finalisation of its digital terrestrial network that made its four stations NRK1, NRK2, NRK3 and NRK Super available to Norway's entire population.
In a global media landscape characterized by a higher fragmentation of the market, NRK1 managed to keep its central position in Norwegians' viewing habits. Although its market-share fell by 5% from 2007, it came back to its usual level at 32.4%. Drama and information accounted for the largest share of NRK1's broadcasting time (19% each), followed by News and Sport (14% each).
More focused on current affairs and documentary programmes, NRK2 kept its market share of 3.4%, while NRK3, aimed at the younger audience, celebrated its first anniversary on September 3, 2008 and a market share of around 2%. NRK Super, launched in the autumn 2008, is the new Children's TV channel. It had a market share of 8.3% in 2008 among its target audience of children aged 2-11.
Within cultural programmes, a total of 540 feature films were broadcast last year across all NRK channels, including 77 Norwegian films, 13 Swedish films, 5 Danish films and 2 Finnish films.
The total number of hours devoted to drama series on NRK channels increased from 1,230 in 2007 to 1,673 in 2008. Most TV drama shown on NRK1 originated from the UK (445 hours in total), followed by the US (276 hours), Australia (56 hours), Sweden (51 hours), Norway (35 hours) and Denmark (24 hours).
The feel good series set in the small island of Ylvingen, attracted an average 1.1m viewers and the EIGHTH and last episode of the first season was watched by 1,127,000 people, an all-time record for a Norwegian TV drama. Himmelblå Season 2 will be broadcast on NRK1 in the winter 2009.
