The high-end Norwegian political thriller series currently in pre-production is produced by The Oslo Company and Viafilm.
NENT Group’s streaming service Viaplay will launch the original series exclusively across the Nordics. No date as been set yet.
Set in Norway, Libya and the UK, the 8-part series Commando (Kommando) will take as inspiration a real event when Norwegian F-16 fighter jets dropped nearly 600 bombs over Libya, between February 15 and July 22, 2011.
The central characters will be four women –an F-16 pilot, a journalist, a possible terrorist and a prime minister, as they explore the reasons why that happened and the consequences for those involved.
Writer/director Per-Olav Sørensen (Nobel, Quicksand) who came up with the idea and spent two years developing the project said: “Telling this story from four very different perspectives is an approach that I hope will be both interesting and disturbing. The series aims to entertain, but also to provoke and enlighten."
NENT Group EVP and Head of Content Jakob Meijlhede Andersen said: “Per-Olav Sørensen is a hugely talented storyteller behind some of Europe’s most critically praised recent series. The immediacy, urgency and powerful visual language of Commando, including extensive first-person footage from inside an F-16 jet, showcases his abilities to the full. This is a thought-provoking drama that confirms NENT Group’s status as home to the best Nordic talents.”
The Oslo Company’s producer Trond Håndlykken Kvernstrøm told nordicfilmandtvnews.com that he expects to announce the international cast and crew this summer. Production is scheduled to start in February 2020.
Viafilm’s Anders Tangen who produces alongside Håndlykken Kvernstrøm said he is thrilled to be associated to Commando, his most ambitious international project since Lilyhammer. “We still need to complete the financing for this huge project that will be filmed across Europe and Africa and mostly in the English language, in an organic way."
Sørensen is currently busy promoting Netflix’s first Swedish original series Quicksand (Störst av allt) which had its world premiere at the Berlinale Series.
