Exclusive: Memento Film International has inked new deals on Joachim Trier’s film including Germany (Koch Media), Spain (Surtsey Films) and Russia (Arthouse).
Other new territories closed, pushing the total sales to more than 30 countries, include the UK/Ireland (Thunderbird Releasing), Switzerland (Outside the Box), Austria (Thim Film), Bulgaria (Bulgaria Film Vision), South Korea (Greennarae) and Israel (Lev Cinema - Shani Films).
The Orchard has North American rights and plans to launch the film in the US on November 10, 2017, a good slot to prepare for the Oscar campaign until the final foreign language film nomination on January 23rd 2018.
Trier’s fourth feature and collaboration with writer Eskil Vogt is also his second selection from Norway for the Academy Awards submission-foreign language film after Reprise (2006). Thelma stars newcomer Eili Harboe as a young student in Oslo, drawn to another woman, who feels overwhelmed by inexplicable powers. The Norwegian Oscar committee described the film as ‘an all-embraced, ambitious and personal drama about a young woman's awakening and detachment'. “It is a film that fascinates, touches and revolts, and starting with the thriller, Trier creates a much larger Nordic, in particular Norwegian story, in a universal framework that anyone can recognise.”
The film had its world premiere at the recent Haugesund Norwegian International Film Festival where it won the Norwegian Film Critics award. It is currently screening at Toronto and will next be shown at the New York Film Festival.
Thelma was produced by Motlys Thomas Robsahm in co-production with Le Pacte (France), Snow´globe (Denmark) and B-Reel (Sweden), with support among others from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. SF Studios Norway will release it domestically on September 15.
