The US subscription Video on Demand service Netflix announced on Wednesday that it will offer streaming of TV shows and movies

The world's leading SVoD service said further details about the pricing, content and supported devices will be announced closer to launch. Nordic Netflix subscribers will then instantly be able to watch a wide array of Hollywood, local and global TV shows and films via PCs, Macs, Smart TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray disc players, smartphones and tablets.

Netflix has more than 27 million streaming members in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The SVOD giant which also acquires original content, chose the Norwegian mobster dramedy Lilyhammer to kick start its' Original Series' strand last February. The success of the series prompted Netflix to acquire further streaming rights of Lilyhammer for the UK and Ireland and to act as co-producer of the show's second season with Norwegian production company Rubicon.

Other VoD providers in the Nordic region include the Amazon.com owned Lovefilm, Voddler, ViaPlay (part of Viasat Broadcasting) and arthouse specialist MUBI available since July in Norway.

This week the Nordic distributor NonStop Entertainment announced that it had closed a deal with iTunes to make some of its titles available as Download and VoD in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
