Ragnar Bragason's feature film Mr Bjarnfredarson is leading the nominations for Iceland's annual Edda Film and TV awards with 11 nominations. It will compete in the top categories of Best Film and Best Director against Fridrik Thor Fridriksson's Mamma Gógó, (photo), the second biggest film nominee (8).

The crew behind Channel 2's popular TV series The Prison Shift and feature film offspring Mr Bjarnfredarson will be dominating the Edda awards on February 27 with their 26 nominations in total, including six shared notably for Best Script (Jóhann Ævar Grímsson, Jón Gnarr, Jörundur Ragnarsson, Pétur Jóhann Sigfússon and Ragnar Bragason), Best Actor (Jón Gnarr, Jorundur Ragnarsson, Pétur Jóhann Sigfússon) and Best Actress (Margreét Helga Jóhannsdóttir). Mr Bjarnfredarson had the biggest opening ever for a feature film in Iceland and has now passed 63,000 admissions.

The beloved actress Kristbjörg Kjeld who has the title role in Mamma Gógó as the filmmaker's mother diagnosed with Alzheimer, is a front runner in her category, and so are the film's composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and cinematographer Ari Kristinsson, who both collaborated on Fridriksson's earlier hit Children of Nature. Fridriksson has another three nominations for his documentary film A Mother's Courage-Talking back to Autism (previously known as Sunshine Boy).

December by Hilmar Oddsson is nominated in five categories, including Best Film and the documentary film Dreamland by Þorfinnur Guðnason and Andri Snær Magnason has four nominations, including Best Director. Julius Kemp's splasher film Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre has one nomination for Best Costumes (María Valles).

The Edda awards will be broadcast live on Channel 2 on Saturday February 27.
