Under the deal between the two major players, Rabbit Films’ CEO Olli Suominen and creative director Tuomas Summanen remain as co-owners.
Thanks to its newly agreed majority stake in Rabbit Films, the Copenhagen-based indie group Monday Media now controls 13 labels in the Nordics and Benelux, covering all genres, from family entertainment, reality TV, comedy, agenda setting journalism to scripted content.
Among the Nordic brands, the most active in scripted content so far have been Monday Scripted Norway (Aber Berger) and comedy specialists Feelgood Scene Film & TV (Next Summer).
Commenting on Monday Media’s strategic acquisition of Rabbit Films and first venture into Finland, Chairman and co-founder Morten Bank said: “Olli, Tuomas and the rest of the team have proven to be some of the most creative format developers and producers in our region. We are so pleased that they are joining the group in our ambition to continuously deliver top-entertainment and formats out of the two most creative regions in Europe-the Nordics and Benelux.”
For his part, Suominen said the deal with Monday Media is a “natural next step” for the company, set up in 2001, which is now one of Finland’s biggest providers of TV entertainment, scripted and branded content, from hit shows like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to the series Summer of Sorrow (Elisa Viihde), Mobile 101 (C More/MTV3) and feature film Bubble.
As part of the deal, Monday Media also inherits Rabbit Films’ global distribution division headed by Jonathan Tuovinen.
According to Rabbit Films’ Head of Scripted Content and actress Minna Haapkylä, the company is currently working on Tiina Lymi’s six-part series Queen of the Fucking Everything, developed for Yle, and the feature project Custody (working title) based on a radio documentary.
