The 6x45’ Norwegian drama comedy set in the salmon industry has started filming August 23 with a cast comprising Trine Wiggen, Svein Roger Karlsen and Kåre Conradi.
Billionaire Island is the second Netflix show from the successful writing duo Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin after the US streamer’s very first original foreign-language series Lilyhammer.
The new drama comedy directed by Marit Moum Aune (Made in Oslo) is set in a small coastal community in Norway. We follow two families who are sworn enemies in the global salmon industry.
The press statement says the series, which taps into the contemporary zeitgeist, delivers a funny as well as dramatic portrait of the fish farming business.
“Over the last few decades, fish farming has changed both the Norwegian coast and international food culture. The time feels right for a television drama about the operators in the industry, and it’s amazing that a global streaming service like Netflix has the guts to tell such a locally grounded story” said Bjørnstad and Skodvin.
Headlining the cast are Trine Wiggen (Varg veum, Cold Prey 3), Svein Roger Karlsen (Home Ground), Ragne Grande (Possession), Kåre Conradi (Norsemen), Oddgeir Thune (Pørni, Home for Christmas), Bjørn Sundquist (Here is Harold) among others, with singer Bjarne Brøndbo from the rock group D.D.E in a supporting role.
The series is being produced by Gudny Hummelvoll and executive produced by Ivar Køhn for Banijay-controlled Rubicon.
The premiere on Netflix is set for 2024.
