The series based on Astrid Lindgren’s classic children’s book adapted by The Bridge’s Hans Rosenfeldt, is due to premiere on Viaplay at the end of 2023.
One of Viaplay’s most ambitious Nordic series, spearheaded by production outfit Filmlance International, Ronja the Robber’s Daughter has added new prominent actors to its stellar ensemble Nordic cast.
Next to Johan Ulveson, (The Bonus Family, Solsidan) cast as the iconic role of Skalde-Per, are Pernilla August (Young Royals, The Best Intentions, Star Wars) in a completely new character as mayor Valdir, and Vera Vitali (The Bonus Family, White Wall) as the vengeful bailiff Cappa.
Speaking about her strong connection to the Astrid Lindgren novel, August said: “Of course, Ronja the Robber’s Daughter was both read and seen at home, so that story means a lot to me, and it is with great pleasure that I can play one of the characters in this story. I'm very happy to be part of a saga that will hopefully be seen by my grandchildren and their children. Ronja is constantly relevant and an inspiration, she goes her own way, doesn't ‘fit in’, and that's good, there should be more role models like that now”, said the star actress.
New cast members just revealed by Viaplay also include Per Lasson, Mattias Silvell, David Wiberg, Lancelot Ncube and Omid Khansari among others.
Actors in the main roles announced earlier include Kerstin Linden as Ronja, Jack Bergenholtz as her friend Birk Borkason, Krista Kosonen and Christopher Wagelin as Ronja’s parents Lovis and Mattis.
Filming is in full swing across Sweden for the six-part series in two seasons, with the first season being directed by Lisa James Larsson (Victoria, A Royal Secret).
The ambitious production co-produced by Film i Väst and backed by Nordisk Film & TV Fond is produced by Bonnie Skoog Feeney and Mattias Arehn for Banijay’s banner Filmlance International.
Executive producers are Viaplay’s Sara Askelöf, Filmlance International’s Hanne Palmquist, and Astrid Lindgren Aktiebolag’s Johan Palmberg.
