The private initiative run by the recently graduated Sunna Gudnadottir offers for streaming online over 30 Icelandic shorts, documentaries, feature films, and other audio-visual works about Iceland. The interface is in English, French and German, and all Icelandic films are subtitled in English, and sometimes in Danish, German, French, Spanish as well. "Icelandic Cinema Online has been very well received by the local film industry," says Gudnadottir. "The most challenging is to clear the rights for the films, and it requires quite a lot of work for Icelandic directors and producers to check their distribution contracts, especially for older titles. But we're gradually adding more titles and within the next few months we'll have another 30 titles available for streaming online".
The cost for single title downloading ranges from €0 to €4. "The pricing varies according to the quality of the films, but we will probably opt for a unified pricing later on," says Gudnadottir. The next step for the young entrepreneur is to develop the web community to get the buzz going on Icelandic films and filmmakers.
