The first foreign remake of the NRK hit show produced by Fremantle Finland had the second best opening among nine original series launched this year by C More.
The Finnish Exit premiered on Telia’s streaming service C More October 13, with two episodes a week.
As in the Norwegian original created by Øystein Karlsen, the story loosely based on real life situations and people, revolves around four mega-rich male friends from the finance elite, looking for an exit from everyday life. Their extreme lifestyle, involving drugs, sex and violence ultimately takes its tolls on their own and their families’ well-being.
The eight-part drama is helmed by Olli Ilpo Salonen from a screenplay by Tuomas Vimma and Matti Koskinen.
Playing the decadent high-flyers are Jarkko Lahti (Jussi-Best actor for The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki), Olli Rahkonen (Mister8, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki), Max Ovaska (Heavy Trip), and Jarkko Niemi (Love Records: Gimme Some Love). The female parts are played by Linnea Leino (Girl Picture), Jemina Sillanpää (Deadwind) and Maryam Razavi (HasBeen).
Jarkko Luoma, CEO of Fremantle Finland and executive producer said the creators added local storylines, more humour and typical Finnish twists for the remake. “In Finland, the presence of money is often shown in a subtler way. Wealth is not so visible in our society and being wealthy and showing it openly is relatively new phenomena in our culture,” Luoma told nordicfilmandtvnews.com. “Screenwriter Tuomas Vimma is an acknowledged author, who has written several successful books on city culture in the 2000’s, and we believe this insight shows in our series too.”
Luoma also praises the entire crew behind the Finnish remake, and especially the cast “that has done an exquisite work to bring these characters to life. We couldn’t be happier of how it turned out,” he said.
Follow up seasons of the drama are already planned. “Of course, we would love to continue on the footsteps of the Norwegian Exit,” Luoma said about his company’s very first local adaptation of a Nordic TV show.
The original Norwegian Exit produced by Fremantle Norway aired in Finland on Yle2 in 2019.
On home turf, Øystein Karlsen’s show has become the most streamed series in NRK’s history. Season 1 averaged 2 million combined viewers and the second season 1.8 million.
It has crossed-over generations of Norwegians and gripped audiences across the Nordic region, as reported by Nordic vision, (CLICK HERE).
A third season written and partly directed by Karlsen, is currently in production, with a premiere on NRK set for the spring 2023.
Reprising their roles from the previous seasons are Simon J. Berger (Adam), Agnes Kittelsen (Hermine), Tobias Santelmann (Henrik), Pål Sverre Hagen (William), Jon Øigarden (Jeppe), Ine Marie Wilmann (Celine) and Sonja Wanda (Tomine).
The 8x30’ series will explore the murky waters of cryptocurrency.
Fremantle’s Petter Testman-Koch serves as producer and NRK’s Marianne Furevold as executive producer.
The format as well as the Norwegian and Finnish series are handled internationally by Fremantle who licensed it to 119 territories worldwide.
