Paris-based Kinology headed by former EuropaCorp sales executive Grégoire Melin, has picked up world rights to the Finnish genre movie Rare Exports by Jalmari Helander, produced by Cinet Film, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. The sales company will present a promo reel and artwork of the film in Cannes.

The two year-old Kinology is specialising in unusual and ambitious feature films such as Johnnie To's Vengeance and Joann Sfar's Gainsbourg. Melin won a bidding war on Rare Exports after producer Petri Jokiranta showed some footage at the last European Film Market in Berlin. Helander's feature debut is a prequel to his cult shorts Rare Export Inc (2003) and Rare Exports Inc-Safety Instructions (2005) that had over one million downloads on YouTube.

The horror fantasy film tells the story of how Santa Clauses are hunted down and domesticated to be exported around the world. Melin says about the film: "it contains all the ingredients to be the perfect Christmas cult-film we've been waiting for: a perfect concept, superb visuals, great actors, and a story with a multi-faceted message that speaks to everyone." The film was produced by Cinet Film in co-production with Norway's Pomor Film, Finland's Davaj Film, France's Love Streams agnès b Productions, with support from the Finnish Film Foundation, Filmcamp and Filmpool Nord. FS Film will release the film in Finland at Christmas time.
