DR Sales has inked major deals on the hit TV show backed by Nordisk Film & TV Fond, with France’s Salto, Spain’s Telefonica among buyers.
The eight-part Danish drama created by Maja Jul Larsen (The Legacy, Borgen) was also acquired by SBS (Australia), BETV (Belgium), Telepool (Germany), M7 (Czech Republic and Slovakia), RTVS (Slovenia), Canal+ (Poland), with negotiations underway in Asia, New-Zealand, the US, Benelux, the Baltics and Italy.
Cry Wolf is the latest prestigious drama from Danish pubcaster DR’s drama department, after When the Dust Settles, Deliver Us, Follow the Money among others.
The series tells of teenage girl Holly who writes a school essay about violence in her home, suddenly creating chaos in her family, as social services decide to remove the girl from parental care. But doubts emerge over who is telling the truth-the young girl or her parents.
“‘Cry Wolf’ is nerve-racking social realism and has audiences questioning the truth until the very end. The world has seen a spike in domestic violence cases during Covid-19, and we hope that ‘Cry Wolf’ will be the much-needed conversation starter,” said Freja Johanne Nørgaard Sørensen, DR’s sales executive.
Since launching on DR’s prime time Sunday slot, on October 11 the series has attracted over a million average consolidated viewers and the first three episodes accounted for over 44% of online viewing on DR TV.
“We’re getting close to a kind of historical tipping point, where digital exceeds linear,” told DR’s communication officer Andreas Relster to nordicfilmandtvnews.com.
The series is also playing across the Nordics on Yle, NRK, SVT and RÚV as part of the Nordic 12 alliance.
