Let Me Fall, the harrowing drama about drug addiction among youngsters in Reykjavik is nominated in the top categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Script (Baldvin Z and Birgir Örn Steinarsson), Best Actress (newcomer Elín Sif Halldórsdóttir), Best Supporting Actress (Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir, Lára Jóhanna Jónsdóttir), Best Support Actor (Þorsteinn Bachmann), Cinematography (Jóhann Máni Jóhansson) and Editing (Úlfur Teitur Traustason).
The film produced by The Icelandic Film Company was the biggest Icelandic of 2018 and second biggest film of the year after Mamma Mia-Here We Go Again.
Benedikt Erlingsson’s multi-awarded Woman at War is running in 10 categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Script (Erlingsson and Ólafur Egill Egilsson) Best Actress (Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir), Best Cinematography (Bergsteinn Björgúlfsson), Best Editing (David Alexander Corno) and Best Music (Davíð Þór Jónsson). The film produced by France’s Slot Machine and Iceland’s Gulldregurinn won this year’s Nordic Council Film Prize.
Rising talent Ísold Uggadóttir named Best Director at Sundance’s 2018 World Cinema Dramatic Competition for her feature debut And Breathe Normally, picks nine Edda nominations such as Best Film, Director, Script, Actress (Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir) and Cinematography (Ita Zbroniec-Zajt and Ásgrímur Guðbjartsson). The film was produced by Zik Zak Filmworks.
Börkur Sigthorsson’s drug-related drama Vultures produced by RVK Studios has five nominations such as Best Actor (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) and Best Editing (Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir and Sigvaldi J. Kárason).
The drama series Manners created by María Reyndal is running in 4 categories including Best Actor (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), Best Supporting Actor (Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson) and Best TV Drama. The mini-series about a family trying to cope with their teenage son’s involvement in a sexual assault was produced by Glassriver for RÚV.
Two films are vying in three categories: Ari Alexander Ergis Magnússon’s Mihkel, running for Best Actor (Estonia’s Pääru Oja), Supporting Actor (Kaspar Velberg) and Music (Gyða Valtýsdóttir), and Árni Ólafur Ásgeirsson’s animated feature Ploey -You Never Fly Alone, competing for Best Children & Youth Film, Best Music (Atli Örvarsson) and Best Special Effects (GunHil).
The TV drama The Flatey Enigma scoops two nominations for Best Costumes (Margrét Einarsdóttir) and Special Effects (Kontrast and GunHil). The series produced by Sagafilm was nominated for this year’s Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for Best Nordic Screenplay.
Three films are vying for Best Documentary: UseLess by Rakel Garðarsdóttir and Ágústa M.Ólafsdóttir, People Like That by Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir and 690 Vopnafjörður by Karna Sigurðardóttir.
Nordisk Film & TV Fond is associated to 27 Edda nominations for Let Me Fall, Woman at War, Ploey-You Never Fly Alone and The Flatey Enigma.
The 20th Edda Film & TV Awards ceremony organised by the Icelandic Film & TV Academy will be held on February 22.
