Exclusive: The Falcons directed by children’s films specialist Bragi Thor Hinriksson is produced by Sagafilm.
The Copenhagen-based sales company will launch the film in Berlin.
The Icelandic adventure football film is based on the first book in the series ‘The Great Football Adventures’, written by entertainer Gunnar Helgason who co-wrote the script, together with the experienced Jóhann Ævar Grímsson (Trapped) and Ottó Geir Borg (I Remember You).
Every year, a major football tournament for kids takes place in the Westman Islands, off the south coast of Iceland. This year, ten-year-old Jon goes competes with his team; he will have to grow up faster than he expected, both on and off the pitch.
Hinriksson who directed the local hit The Magic Wardrobe (Best Children Film at the local Edda film awards 2012), says The Falcons which combines heart, strength and character, has been ‘his most challenging film so far’. “It’s a story of dreams, expectations and strong friendship,” he summarises.
In some of the title adult roles are Sigurður Sigurjónsson (RAMS), Gunnar Hansson (Beowulf & Grendel) and Jóhann G. Jóhannsson (Fortitude).
The film is produced by Anna Vigdís Gísladóttir and Thorhallur Gunnarsson of Sagafilm, with co-financing from RUV and support from the Icelandic Film Centre, Iceland’s Ministry of Industries and Innovation, and Creative Europe.
Sagafilm’s Nordic managing Director Kjartan Þór Þórðarsson told nordicfilmandtvnews.com: “The film has a great potential, with the World Football Cup just around the corner. It’s a lovely family film, our pet project at Sagafilm.”
Samfilm will release the film in Icelandic cinemas in March 2018. A TV version of 6X25’ will also be available.
LevelK will start pitching the film to buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market.
