Alex Szalat
, former Deputy Head of the Documentary Department of Arte France will deliver the opening speech.

The webinar co-organised by Nordisk Panorama and Nordisk Film & TV Fond intends to facilitate the dialogue between independent filmmakers and public broadcasters, and improve mutual cooperation, at a time when the gap between the two parties seems to be widening.

What does a day in the life of a commissioning editor look like, what is the chain of command, and how does that affect the choices made and the projects supported, are some of the questions that will be tackled.

The 33rd Nordisk Panorama Film festival will take place from September 22-27 in Malmö.

This year’s opening film is Inka Achté’s Golden Land, (Kultainen maa), one of 15 films competing for the Best Nordic Documentary Prize. The journey of self-discovery from Finnish/Somali Mustafe and his family was awarded earlier the Newcomer Golden Alexander Dimitri Eipides Award in Thessaloniki, the Audience Award in Tampere and a Special Mention in DocPoint.

Achté said about her film: “When I heard about Mustafe's story, it was like being handed a winning lottery ticket when it comes to filmmaking. This is a classic story of treasure hunting with various deeper layers, a filmmaker's dream. I really hope the film could help dispel stereotypes about the Somali community, and let the audience see how varied and interesting the Nordic community can be if we are more welcoming to people willing to contribute to our society. And of course, I also hope the film will make them laugh and cry.”

The film was produced by Napafilms (Finland), Auto Images (Sweden) and UpNorth Films, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Cats & Docs handles sales.

Also on the programme of the opening night is the short film Night of the Living Dread by Swedish-based animation director Ida Melum.
