The Danish youth series is produced by Nimbus Film for NENT Group’s streamer Viaplay, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
Filming is underway in Greater Copenhagen.
The 8x28’ coming of age crime drama What About Monica is written by rising talent Julie Budtz Sørensen based on her own popular podcast Det med Liv. Nils Holst-Jensen directs.
The story centres on Louise (16), who is trying to find out who raped her best friend Monica at a party. As she digs deeper into the case, Louise discovers that everyone around her has secrets and forbidden emotions. When she starts to develop feelings for Thais, the enigmatic outsider whom her friends suspect of being the rapist, she has to choose between sticking with her friends or defending Thais, whom she believes is innocent.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s daughter Filippa Coster-Waldau makes her TV drama debut in her first major role after the short film The Girl and the Dogs (2014). Maja Thiele is co-starring.
Nimbus Film producer Liv Hide said: “We believe the series has an important story to tell and we hope to create a moving, suspenseful and engaging show. We can’t wait for it to meet its audience!”
“This series focuses on elucidating the complexity of choices and related consequences, which makes What about Monica a touching portrait of the crucial teenage years, where social life dominates everything,” added Filippa Wallestam, EVP & Chief Content Officer NENT Group.
The Danish TV show is part of the Nordic streamer’s strategy to bolster its young adult-oriented Originals, as explained by Wallestam in an interview with us - CLICK HERE.
What About Monica is due to premiere exclusively on Viaplay later this year.
