Denmark at 34% market share, kids films boost Norwegian admissions.

Denmark: Record 34% for local films
The love affair for Danish films continues in Denmark spearheaded by Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt (number one at the Danish Top Ten with 673,000 admissions), local films reached a new record during the first half of 2013 with 2.25 million tickets sold, for a 34% cut of the total market, estimated at 6.46 million. The local family film My African Adventure (413,000 admissions) and the comedy All for Two (392,000 admissions) also dominated the charts and together with The Hunt, the three local films accounted for over 65% of all Danish admissions according to figures published by the Danish Film Institute.

The Institute’s CEO Henrik Bo Nielsen said the popularity of Danish films and of the cinema experience are all the more remarkable in the context of a very competitive market where new streaming services such as Netflix, YouBio and HBO have attracted ‘hundreds of thousands of people during the same period.

NORWAY: Kids movies boost admissions
Cinema-going continued to be very popular in Norway and during the first six months of the year: nearly 5 million people went to the cinema, up 2% from 2012 at the same period. But besides the Norwegian kids movies Casper & Emma-Best Friends and Ploddy the Police Car on the Case based on well-known characters, Norwegians stayed away from local fare that took a disappointing 11.8% of all admissions.

The second half of the year looks promising with a very wide range of films for all age groups including a good handful of children and youth films. The coming of age comedy Crack, Back, Sack (Pornopung) released on July 26 proved a popular summer bet (over 56,000 tickets sold so far) for Film Distribusjon and the family film Granny and the Kids (Mormor og de åtte ungene) inspired by Anne Cath Vestly’s beloved books went straight to number one for Nordisk Film and had the best opening for a children’s film in 2013.

As of today, 14 of 22 Norwegian films have sold 690,568 tickets and the three kids movies Casper & Emma-Best Friends, Ploddy the Police Car on the Case and Granny & the Kids have combined admissions of 430,866 or 62% of all Norwegian admissions.
Nina Refseth’s head of the Norwegian Film Institute expects final admissions for Norwegian films to be around 2.5 million.
